It caused the value of the dollar to float on international markets and basically deflate by nearly 50%. Oil, which was sold in U.S. dollars, also deflated which lead to the formation of OPEC, an agency that basically price-fixed oil.<br /><br />I'm not sure, but I believe it was a deliberate move pushed by U.S. multi-nationals to deliberately deflate the dollar so as to open more markets for U.S. exports, which were substantial in those days.
