Top Ten: Anti-Religious Songs

Some of these are a stretch, but they're better than the ones that didn't make the list. Usually I can come up with 20 choices which I can whittle down to ten good ones, but I struggled to come up with 14. I guess I don’t have a very irreligious mp3 collection (which currently stands at about 20,000).

In actual fact, I think there just aren’t many songs which criticize religion. I’m sure there’s some others I didn’t cover, but either I don’t have that song, forgot it, or it sucks (usually all three).

10. Franz Ferdinand – Evil and a Heathen
9. Tori Amos – God
8. Marilyn Manson – Fight Song
7. Nirvana – Ain’t It a Shame
6. Alanis Morisette – Forgiven
5. The Dandy Warhols – I Am a Scientist
4. A Perfect Circle – Judith
3. Nine Inch Nails – Heresy
2. John Lennon – Imagine
1. Stevie Wonder – Superstition

  1. Evil and a Heathen isn't anti-religious, firstly, one line is:

    I like how you pretend
That the end will be the end

Emphasis on the word 'pretend'. If anything its against anti-religious zealots in my opinion.

Also, Imagine by John Lennon isn't really anti-religion is more anti-organised religion, Lennon was a very spiritual person much annoyed by organised religion as the Maharishi felt up his friend who was a girl.

  2. Religion and spirituality are 2 different things. Religion is religion whether organized or not. Religion has nothing to do with spirituality and all to do with following pointless rules.

  3. Billy Joel's Only the Good Die Young always makes it to the top of my list, partially because my mother told me that when she was a teenager, she used to get together with her friends and play it as loud as she possibly could from the car stereo to spite her strict Catholic mother.

    1. Imagine was written more about him and Paul fighting about the Beatles.

John Lennon had a song which he said he didn't believe in Jesus

but this was more of an ode to growing up and not trying to obtain things like, sex, fun, material, all things he lost after the Beatles..

I can't say Lennon disliked Christianity.

The song about the warm gun is pretty much something else...maybe it is about how priests are very sexual towards women.

  6. You should have a listen to 'Four Winds' by Bright Eyes: 'The Bible's blind, the Koran's deaf, the Torah's mute. If you burned them all together you'd get close to the truth ...'

I saw you followed my blog, any particular reason? Haha. I like yours; totally on board the atheism train.

    Cheers

  7. How Is it, that there are no Bad Religion songs on this list?

  8. How about "Do the Evolution" by Pearl Jam? "I can kill 'cause in God I trust"; "I'm a thief, I'm a liar, here's my church, I sing in the choir."
Also, "Rise Up! Rise Up!" and "Big Bang" by Cursive are all about challenging religion ("Rise up! Rise up! There's no one to worship, but plenty of life to lose"; "There was this big bang once. Why are we raptured on our knees?"). Great songs, too.

  9. I'm an atheist but, personally, I love religious songs. My favourite is "Killing for Jesus" by the Circle Jerks.

  10. Virgin Steele - Invictus (The entire album) (although perhaps more deicidal than anti-religious, on second thought, Perseus holding Medusa's head on the album cover definitely sets the tone.)

  11. Haillie Sellasse, Up Your Ass by Propaghandi also known as Fuck Religion.

"Take a look at your promised land.
Your deed is that gun in your hand.
Mt. Zion's a minefield. The West Bank. The Gaza Strip.
Soon to be parking lots for American tourists and fascist cops.
Fuck zionism. Fuck militarism. Fuck americanism.
    Fuck nationalism. Fuck religion."

  12. A song you should consider for this list is Question Marks by Shad. He is a Toronto based Hip Hop artist and in my opinion it is the best song ever released questioning religion. His critticism is balanced and unbias and it makes for an amazing song

    1. Shad concludes that there is a God by the end of the song. It's lyrically pretty interesting but not anti-religious at all

  13. The song "No God" by Darkest Hour would top my list...

    "There's no salvation
In a world where you worship proven fiction
And no redemption for a life of servitude
    You bow and you heed
    Unhallowed command
Your only care is the money we gain
    It's the same place
    A hollow escape
A palace of concrete and glass
    Keep waiting, keep waiting
    For no god
    To erase you
    No god
To make you fall to your knees

    There's blood on these pages
And the war inside your head
    Is with yourself
Through the ages, through every form of "Hell"
    It's the same face
    A hollow escape
A palace of concrete and glass
    Keep waiting, keep waiting
    For no god
    To consume you
    No god
    To be your burden
    No god
    To use you
    No god
    There is only illusion

    The usurper of life
    It'll bleed every last drop
And it'll suck all the breath out of you
    And leave you forsaken

    There's no god
    To release you
    There's no god
To make you fall down to your knees
    There's no god
    To deceive you
    There's no god
    To be your burden
    There's no god
    There's no god
    There's no god
    There is only illusion"

  16. WTF! Where is Gary Numans 'The Angel Wars'? That is seriously, the most antireligious song ever written! Infact the whole 'Exile' album from 1997, is all based around the lie of religion and its disease! Highly recommend a listen!

  17. What about Morte Et Dabo- Asking Alexandria? Judith, a perfect circle? Two good songs right there! D:

  18. One of the best anti-religious songs has to be For The Greater Good Of God by Iron Maiden. Amazing musically and the lyrics are pure genius..!

  20. As someone who was a teen during the 80s, I'm deeply offended that you missed Blasphemous Rumours by Depeche Mode. For best results, make sure to wear all black with matching black eyeliner.

  22. Almost anything from Blackmetal. only, the genre tends to be more anti-christian than anything else. Then again, they are the most annoying religious peeps

  23. Jane's Addiction - Had A Dad.

"if you see my dad, tell him my brothers have all gone mad, they're beating on each other..... I walked around, even tried to call, had this funny feeling like he's not there at all."

  24. Theres a song by the Australian rapper Vents called 'Wheres God Now' thats very good.

  25. You have all missed the best song...Dumb All Over by Frank Zappa. Sums it up for me.....
You cant run a country by a book of religion
Not by heap or a lump or a smidgen
Of foolish rules and ancient date
Designed to make you all feel great
Whilst you murder, torture and mutilate
Those unbelievers from a neighbouring state.

  26. Best God In Show - NOFX

    I have no consideration
    Zero mutual respect
For billions who suffer from rational thought neglect
    I don't wanna waste a sentence
    I don't want a conversation
That's gonna end in disdain disbelief and aggravation

And I find it's getting harder to hang out
With grown adults who actually believe
In Santa Clause and Noah's Ark, and Their god is the best
My distaste has turned into detest

Who would read a 2000-year-old medical journal?
    Techniques for blood-letting
    Advice on trichinosis
    Would you navigate the globe
With a map of a flat Earth?
Without DNA testing would you believe virgin birth?

And I find it's getting painful to put up
With grown adults who actually believe
In unicorns and creation and god always takes their side
That's when my innocent jabbing turns snide

    Thank god for the Grammy
    Thank god for the touchdown
Thank god for blowing up the enemy's sacred ground
So how am I supposed to take anything you say seriously
When you swap free will for faith, hope and pre-destiny?

And it's getting agonizing to hang out
With grown adults who actually believe
Mythology and history trump physics and science
My aversion has turned to abhorrence

  29. I'm sorry us Christians and Catholics destroyed Judaism

and were responsible for the holocaust.

You Jews hate us Christians and Catholics because Adolf

Hitler used us to persecute you and he almost destroyed your race which I dont blame him.

First of Franz Ferdinand is A kike

Alanis morrissette is another Jew Dyke who starred in a Kevin Smith movie, who was a cocksucker to Miramax a Jew run company.

You jews are going to pay, now that Trump is in office you kikes will see how much America, The Middle East

and Isis is going to destroy your faithless, useless

    Judaism once and for all...

  30. Kurt Cobain had nothing to do with Christianity,

    Alanis morrisette is a kike,

who starred in a kike movie made by Miramax who is a kike.

John Lennon imagined a world where him and Ono could have sex all day and write off Religion.

Trent Reznor was an idiot and no one even listens to him anymore.

The Jews hate Christianity because Jesus made them poor in Israel.

Jesus came and took away from the pharisees who were competing with each other over material things.

The Jews are now heading towards a second holocaust with Valerie Cortez, Isis, Trump,

and you have the gall to put down Christianity over

Aint it a shame which wasn't even a Nirvana song.

Ain't it a shame was a Led Belly song based on

    slavery not religion.

    How can you quote kikes?
