Monday Rule: Waiting at the Airport Gate

Anyone should be allowed to go through airport security and wait with their loved ones at the gate for their plane to take off. As it is, you need a ticket to go through security, so you just get an awkward hug goodbye in front of a huge line of people, not that classic, romantic goodbye before they walk onto the plane. You can’t even watch them take off knowing which plane is theirs. But worst of all, when you see your loved one off at the airport now, you aren’t even the last person to grope them before they leave the city.

  1. I'm a consultant who does business on four continents, so I fly a lot. It's just routine for us. Mrs. Animal drops me off outside the airport, hug and kiss at curbside and off she goes.

I agree with the contention, though. I don't see why someone shouldn't be able to be accompanied by family to the gate, if they are willing to pay the ridiculous parking rates at most airports. They would, after all, be going through the same security.

At the same time, I would also be in favor of limiting it to family members and significant others of ticketed passengers. I remember all too well when Hare Krishnas and kooks of all sorts wandered airports, soliciting "donations" and making a damned nuisance of themselves.

@Animal, Have you ever seen how many people stand in the security line at the Atlanta airport in the morning? I don't think we need more people standing in line, especially when we're trying to make the 6 AM flight out. Give your little kisses at home, and don't let animals with separation anxiety make us waste even more time at security. It's bad enough that we have to take our fucking shoes off and then run barefoot through the terminal to get to our fucking gate on time. If they're not traveling, they have no business there. Why stop at loved ones? Why don't we have clowns and jugglers standing in line too while we're at it. You know, just to entertain travelers while they wait their turn for the metal detector. I wonder how many times the knife-juggling clowns on unicycles would make the metal detector beep. It would be kind of funny, but a huge waste of time.

And by that Mr Animal, I mean no offense to you. I apologize for my tone, but clearly, I have a good point.

  3. I'm sad no one suggested just doing away with the security lines completely.

  4. Nah, I like the peace of mind offered by the patting down of innocents.

  5. No one has the right to peace of mind, but we do have the right to not be subjected to unwarranted searches.

But we're scared, so that goes out the window...

  6. It's not unwarranted because the ticket holder gave their implicit consent by purchasing said ticket. Besides, only poor people (who are all potential terrorists) fly commercial airlines. Rich people (a morally superior breed) own private jets.

You don't like it: boycott the airlines and ride the bus. I don't like it either but it's their business, so it's their rules. When enough customers stop buying tickets, then they will have to make changes.

  7. So where is my freedom to buy a ticket and board a plane without my rights being violated? It's government mandated security measures performed by federal employees, and they have no right to be doing what they're doing.

And I don't fly, but I should be able to. Fuck the TSA.

  8. Passengers on private planes are not subjected to security screening. Commercial airlines are in favor of TSA screening because they want to protect their assets (planes cost a lot of money). Therefore, they do not use their lobbying power to stop it. And consumers enable it by doing business with them. It's all about money. The consumer has all the power but they refuse to use it to change things.

  9. I could just as easily blame voters, who voted the police state politicians into office, but the fact remains: the actions are unconstitutional and should be ended by any means necessary.

*ominous gun sound of shotgun being pumped*

Damnit, I just sent an unspent cartridge flying under the couch.

  10. I fly a lot. I've never been strip-searched, and I have never had an anal probe. You take your shoes off, you walk through the scanner, you put your shoes back on, and you are on your way. WTF is the big deal. The only people who have problems are the tards who don't know you're not supposed to bring liquids, and the complainers who like to make a scene for the sake of making a scene. All the TSA people I've met are courteous professionals. Oh no! Some TSA database has a picture of me naked. Some hot 22 year-old TSA chick is probably stimulating herself while looking at it. Cool!

... or people with embarrassing medical conditions, or people who are disabled and for whom taking off your shoes may take minutes, or people who look like they may call God "Allah," or really anyone who has their fucking constitutional right to not be searched.

But yeah, we should just shut up, stop whining, and do as we're told. That's clearly the overall message we should be sending on this, and all matters.
