Monday Rule: One Word Identifiers

From now on, every group can be called whatever they want, so long as it is only one word. No more “Roman Catholics.” It’s just “Catholics.” No more “African-Americans,” so guilty feeling liberals have to call them “black” like everyone else. The one I am having trouble with is “little people.” I feel like all the one-word options are kind of inaccurate or offensive. I guess since “black” is an adjective and gets added to “black people,” then “little” is one word and should count. And speaking of “black people,” the NAACP is now the NAABP. “Colored” just sounds racist. Besides, everyone knows black isn’t a color.

  1. If I were a midget, I would be highly offended if someone referred to me as a "little person." Before I reached the age of 14 or so, I was very short, and I got highly offended when someone referred to me as "little."

I mean, if I were a little person, I would be highly offended. I did not mean midget, as that is derogatory for some inexplicable reason. I think its because it implies that a person is little or something.

  2. Perhaps I need to think of a one-word description for a centrist who leans more progressive than conservative and more libertarian than progressive, so as not to give Mr. Myste a headache.

  3. John: And if you call them a dwarf, it implies their best friends with elves and hobbits. I only knew one "little person," and he made me call him "Jake." It was awkward...

Matt: There is a name for people like that. You, my friend, are a Democrat.

  4. Funny, many Democrats who I've talked politics with seem to think I should be a Republican.

  5. Of course Democrats would say you should vote Republican, they're self-defeating.

  6. I've just come across your blog and it is absolutely wonderful. I've always been confused about "calling things by names that could be offensive".

I've heard some people say that saying "black" or "black person" is offensive. It's in-fact offensive that to imply, by being black, you are in a position where by stating what you are would cause offence. *shrug*

    I honestly don't even.

  7. I am not prepared to admit Matt to the club. Can we just call him an independent?

  8. Is it wrong if I call midget women "cute"?

  9. Mac, it is more inaccurate than wrong, I suspect.
