Provocative Provocation #1

I tried doing a “Discussion” series, but I think I was asking questions that were too tame to warrant a response. So, I’ll give it another shot, this time I’ll be my usual assholic self rather than politely civil. So, let’s get on with it then.

I don’t think “being gay” is genetic. In fact, I don’t think anyone can “be gay.”

Anyone care to disagree?

  1. If being "gay" means being sexually attracted to a person of the same gender, it most definitely can be genetic many cases, but I could definitely see it being social in other cases and it can be a combo of both in many other cases as well.

If a person who wishes to be straight (usually because (s)he was raised religious or became religious) and no matter how hard (s)he tries they can't stop being gay, I would say that for them homosexuality is mostly if not entirely genetic. I know that this indeed the case for many individuals.

If that doesn't show how homosexuality is genetic or at the very least so ingrained in their personality that they have to at least be considered "gay" then I don't know what does.

It is something they can't change, thus they simply "are gay".

Even if that weren't the case and homosexuality was simply a choice, there still isn't anything wrong with it.

    That's the most important part.

I certainly wouldn't say anyone can choose who they find attractive, but I find it to be a false dichotomy to imply something must be a choice or genetic; there's simply many more factors.

Things I consider in my analysis of it:

    - in ancient Greece, every free man would have had sexual relationships with both men and women by the time he was an adult
    - "orientation" is not fixed for life in all individuals
    - I imagine it is easy to convince yourself you are disgusted by something, but near impossible to convince yourself you are attracted to something, though either is surely possible for some people and not for others

I hear you on that! I HATE the that the whole world assumes if something isn't learned than it must be genetic. SO SO simplistic!

    :)
