Formed in London in 1989 as Seymour, Blur established themselves early in the UK before finally breaking out in the US with their eponymously titled fifth album. I can’t be the only one who bought it in 1997 thinking it was their first release…
Blur reinvented themselves a couple times, and their albums reflect this. Much of their early work is typical Britpop, complete with horns and organ. They also had a driving post-punk alternative phase (beginning with their 1997 release), and a then a move towards more electronic and hip hop music.
Blur’s lead vocalist and songwriter is also the lead vocalist and songwriter for the virtual band “Gorillaz,” an act worthy of their own Music Monday. Maybe next week…
On a personal note, “Coffee & TV” is one of my favorite music videos of all time. How can you not love that milk carton?
