Discussion: Socialism

Would you rather take a one week vacation anywhere of your choosing or let someone you never met get a medical operation to save their life?

[In reality, this is not actually the real choice... since people who do live in social democracies get more vacation time... but for the sake of argument... this is how I will phrase it.]

  1. Just give me six weeks of vacation a year! False dichotomy though, playing the zero-sum game.

  2. This is illogical. Socialism, only more explicitly than democracy, doesn't allow for choices, a state dictates what's going to be, all at the threat of violence to others. You are describing an anarchistic question, so if I actually have a choice I would choose for someone to get an operation.

  3. I'm well aware that this is not how socialism works, I was just curious. I should have titled the discussion differently, but it's too late now.

  4. They can definitely have the operation. But then, I hate trips and would rather be dead than go "on vacation." Maybe this influenced my vote.

  5. It would certainly influence my choice (I hate travel as well, but I tried to pick something other people seem to enjoy).

Worst discussion question in a while. Rusty...

Socialism no more requires violence than capitalism requires robber barons. Make of that what you will.

Socialism's flaws come from the difficulty of centrally directing something as complex and poorly understood as an economy, not from some innate need for violence to get people to do what their parents and religion spent a decade-and-a-half of their life trying to tell them is the right thing to do.

Since when does "going on vacation" necessarily equate with "going on a trip"? I rarely go anywhere when I take my "vacation" time at work. Call that a "staycation" if you will, but I think the term vacation to most people means simply time off from work, which we need a great deal more of in the U.S.
